Magick in Music

Have you ever been feeling down. Everything seems to be going wrong in your life. You hide away in your room and try to shut out the world. You have the radio or a playlist going and that deep, sad song comes on and it\’s crushing you. Somehow, every note, every word is like the band is in the room singing the song directly to you.

Maybe you\’re out partying with your friends. Your favorite band came to town and you guys got tickets. Your best friend just got a new car and you\’re all having the night of your life. You\’re in the middle of the crowd. The lights are warm, the bass is pounding in your chest, in that moment you are one with creation.

Maybe your scene is totally different. Whatever it looks like, we\’ve all been there at some point. We\’ve all experienced music on a spiritual level. If you haven\’t, I truly feel sorry for you. It\’s a cleansing experience like nothing else I know.

There is a reason every spiritual practice has a musical element. From the primitive tribal ancestors pounding drums and letting out gutteral roars to the clean, robed priests singing blessings over communion. We\’ve already talked about how existence is a vibration. Vibration is an expression of energy. It only makes sense that sound waves would be integral to Magick. Sound waves are a clear, black and white method of creating an energetic vibration that has a tangible presence in the physical world.

Whatever the reason, we are built to feel music. As a student of musical theory for 20 years, there are certain rhythms that feel right and certain rhythms that feel wrong. There are patterns of notes that feel right while anything outside of that feels wrong. Music is primordial and it is something that we feel a connection to when there is no real scientific explanation. Some people say it has to do with our heartbeat. That\’s horse sh*t. Everyone\’s heart beats are different and they fluctuate all of the time. Neuroscientists will tell you about binaural tones and there is science there but it\’s more of observed effects than an actual reasoning. The truth is we don\’t know why music effects us so strongly, but it is an undeniable truth that it does.

So what does this have to do with Magick? Well aside from the fact that it is kind of Magick by itself, it is also an exceptional tool for Magick.

Firstly, if you have ascertained that this song helps you feel confident and energetic while that song helps you process your depressed emotions… That is Magick. At the end of the day the purpose of Magick is to achieve a result. If you can do that with a song, who cares if patchouli and quartz weren\’t involved. Use what you have to get the desired results.

But you\’re not here for therapeutic advice. You\’re here for witchcraft. Don\’t worry, that\’s what I\’m going to give you.

Remember a long time ago when I told you that manifestation is largely based on your mental state? That your emotions needed to be controlled because they would have magical effects whether you intend them to or not? Well music, as I\’ve just explained to you, can be one of the most effective tools for willfully altering your emotional state. If you want to perform Magick for blessing someone with joy, listen to music that makes you carefree and happy before and during your spell. If you are casting a spell for uncrossing, listen to some metal that makes you feel like an unstoppable force.

The music you listen to has a supernatural effect on your mood, and therefore, your energy. When you analyze and catalog those effects, you can incorporate them as ingredients to your spells, just like you would with herbs, stones, candles, and whatnot. In my opinion, music can be an even stronger ingredient than those in most cases.
