Another quick, easy form of Magick that can be put into place and forgotten is the Spell Bag. These are small pouches filled with magically charged ingredients like dried herbs, dusts, and stones. The pouch can be carried by the magician, buried in a designated place, or otherwise concealed. The important part is that once it\’s put in place it remains out of sight.
You can start by choosing the purpose of the spell pouch. It is not uncommon to make a personal boosting pouch to carry with you. These would be made for protection, personal enhancement, prosperity, or whatever boon you would like for yourself. Some magicians will make a set of four bags to act as protective wards, burying them at the four corners of a property. I have personally made pouches for throwing into bon fires in which one is used to invite spirits to come be present and then a second pouch to ask them to depart. Whatever you want to do, you can probably do it with a spell bag.
Now that you have your intention, get the pouch you will use. Many magicians will use small leather bags or hemp pouches because it feels more sacred, which helps the energy manifest. I like to use simple brown paper lunch bags. There are three reasons for this. They are cheap and plentiful. They can burn easily for bonfire Magick. You can use any pen or marker to add a sigil to the bag, increasing it\’s potency and adding another layer of spellwork. Choose whichever pouch you feel is most appropriate for you.
Now you will need to choose the appropriate ingredients for your bag. Herbs are almost essential for spell bags as they are the most easily accessible materials that inherently have a wide range of pre-existing properties. If you haven\’t already found a good source for studying herbs and their properties, I would highly recommend Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs by Scott Cunningham. It is available on Amazon for $16.99 and has by far been the most valuable resource throughout all of my studies. Otherwise, there is always valuable information online if you know how to find it. Whatever you decide, choose a few different herbs that have the properties you are trying to achieve with your spell bag and put a teaspoon or two of each into the pouch. Take a moment to put some energy into the pouch and will your intention into the herbs.
If there is a small object that you would be willing to part with that somehow is relevant to the purpose you have in mind for your bag, you can add that into the bag. You may put beads or gems in the pouch if you have some that align with the bag\’s intended purpose. DO NOT put stones or plastic in the bag if you will burn it. Some stones explode under enough heat and plastic produces a toxic smoke when burned. Also, if you are burning the bag, make sure to do so outdoors or in a fireplace and take all necessary precautions associated with fire.
Depending on the intention of the bag, you may want to put in some consecrated dirt ( cemetery dirt is great but should be harvested respectfully and responsibly ). A small jar of moon water or essential oil may be appropriate as well.
Once all of your chosen ingredients are in the bag, charge the bag with energy and will your intentions into it. When complete, close the bag and tie it closed with a cord, hemp string, or yarn. I personally prefer colored yarn as I can match the color to the intention. Once it is closed and tied, your bag is complete. Wherever you deploy the bag, it will produce the effect for which you created it. The interesting part is that these only seem to work while they are out of sight. When they are visible, they are dormant, so be smart about where you place them.
