Daily Magick – Sigils

We live in a fast paced world. Everything is available at our fingertips right this moment if we want it. In fact, it\’s all there whether we want it or not. There is an abundance of information, misinformation, distraction, and stimulation all around us 24/7. The noise can be overwhelming. The chaos, exhausting. Sometimes there is so much floating around that it obscures us from what we are actually trying to find.

When seeking information feels like swimming through noise, and everything is designed to catch your attention or bait you in, it can be tiresome. It\’s easy to run out of steam and stop swimming. Sometimes we get drawn in by these manufactured distractions and don\’t even remember what it was we were searching for to begin with. Modern life is designed with very little room for spirituality and when growth requires fighting through the sea of noise, sometimes we decide not to leave port, staying in our bubble. You don\’t get fulfillment, but you don\’t get lost at sea.

If you\’ve taken the path of the magician, you have likely felt the amazing fulfillment that you can only get from a life with Magick. Things like TikTok and YouTube are amazing resources that bring joy to almost everyone. Youtube especially can be a powerful tool for learning new things. Social Media allows people to connect like never before. We can share experiences and knowledge. We can discuss philosophies and grow our base. But these resources also heavily add to the noise. Life is too short for \”killing time\” all the time. There is nothing wrong with rest and relaxation. Entertainment is fine, and even necessary. We all need to recharge. When a breaks and then is rested, it often heals back stronger. We need our down time. But when life is wake up, get ready for work, drive to work, work, drive home from work, decompress from work, sleep for the next day of work…….we lose who we are. We no longer live the parts of our lives that we choose. In this cycle, we live primarily to feed the cycle.

So what can we do about it? Realistically, not much. There are complicated, drawn out strategies of how to live off the grid but the odds of you actually being able to follow through and succeed are so slim that going into the how would just be adding to the noise. Instead, we\’re gonna go a different route. I\’ll tell you how to actually keep some Magick in your life even if you live in the machine of modern consumerism.

Sigils are one of the easiest, most bang for your buck form of Magick that gives you that dopamine rush of walking the magician\’s path. In broad strokes, a sigil is a symbol that is comprised of other symbols and charged with energy and intent to achieve a specific result. It\’s a semi-permanent spell in the form of a written symbol. I\’ve used sigils on the backside of my wristwatch, the backside of a necklace pendant, the underside of my coffee mug, a piece of paper in my pocket, you name it. They are an effective way to carry a little bit of Magick with you at all times. The best part is, once you\’ve designed a sigil, you can reuse it over and over again, just charge each one you make with energy and intent.

When making a sigil, it\’s good to use ancient, established symbols ( futhark runes, Theban script, Babylonian seals, etc ) as these carry with them the energy of hundreds of years or more. But doing so should only be done if you are very familiar with the symbols and the energies that come with them. If you aren\’t well versed in those symbols, don\’t use them. It is perfectly fine to make your sigils out of symbols you create. To do this, think about what it is you want to do. One example I\’ve seen floating around recently is to charge your coffee cup with a sigil for awakening, energizing, and blessing. If you want to do something like this with your own custom symbols, you would break it down into pieces.

First, you want the sigil to awaken you. Let\’s make a symbol for awakening. Put pen to paper, take a few breaths, and think about awakening. What does awakening feel like? Is it a rush of cool air? Is it eyes wide open? Is it a zap of electricity? Whatever images or sensations are evoked when you think about awakening is how you\’re charging the symbol. With those things in mind, start drawing. Draw what comes to mind. It isn\’t a picture or written word, though it might have a letter worked into it. It should be no more than a few lines or something equivalent. When you feel you have drawn awakening, it\’s time for the next part. I would suggest labeling this as awakening and setting it aside. You have now created a new magical symbol that you can use later. If you keep a Book of Shadows, you will want to add it to that when you can, along with whatever images you held in mind when creating it.

So the awakening portion is done. What else do you want the sigil to do? You could do a symbol for energizing, but you will likely find that to be redundantly similar to awakening. For me, I would choose clarity as my second symbol. Again, with pen to paper, what does clarity look like? There is a sharpness to everything, almost a static in the room. There is a framework around the outside of my vision, as if I\’m looking through something, a tool designed to enhance my perspective. I picture lenses. For me, clarity is a round symbol, lots of curves and primarily drawn on the outer edge while the inside is empty. Once you have your symbol for clarity, label it and set it aside.

Lastly, we want our sigil to give us a blessing for the day. General blessings are basically an all purpose charge, similar to luck. It\’s just a way of giving a little extra boost for whatever we may face. With pen to paper, I picture radiance, a golden-white glowing sphere. I visualize an aura surrounding me with pale-golden light. I can hear a faint, mid-pitch hum. Like clarity, blessing for me is heavily existing on the outer portion of the space. Instead of circling the outside, blessing is boxy, crossing from edge to edge, coming close to the middle but never entering it. The symbol you draw should be based on how you feel blessing looks. When it is done, label it and set it aside.

Now that we have our symbols laid out, it\’s time to make a sigil. Grab your coffee mug and a black permanent marker, fine tip is best. Have your symbols nearby. While you focus on the imagery you associated with awakening, begin drawing the symbol on the bottom of the cup. Will the symbol to give the cup and any contents it will hold to be charged with awakening. Once you have finished, look at the symbol and look at your clarity symbol. Think about how they can fit together in a way that feels right. You will find their anchor point as it is revealed to you. When this happens, it\’s time to draw clarity onto the cup. Visualizing the imagery you associated with clarity, begin drawing the symbol over the awakening symbol as you saw them fit together. They will be overlapping in the same space so that they become one new symbol. As you do this, will the symbol to charge the cup and any contents it will hold to be charged with clarity. Once you have finished, look at it and look at the symbols for blessing. Again, try to visualize how the blessing symbol is supposed to align and fuse with the two you have already drawn. When it comes to you, it\’s time to finish your sigil. While visualizing your imagery for blessing, draw the symbol in place on the two existing symbols. While doing so, charge the symbol with the intent of blessing. Will it to charge the cup and any contents it will hold with a blessing for the drinker. This time, when you have finished, call your core. Charge the sigil with energy while focusing on the refreshing, energizing, optimizing effect you want the cup to give whoever drinks from it. After a few moments, you\’re done.

You\’ve created your first sigil and you\’ve enchanted your first magickal item. Wanna know the best part? That sigil is now part of your magickal alphabet. A little bit of the energy you just charged the cup with has bound itself forever to that sigil. Each time the sigil is reused and recharged somewhere else, the effectiveness, the energy behind it will grow. After it has been used enough times, it becomes a magickal seal. When that happens, you won\’t need to charge it with intent or energy. You can just draw it and move on. You\’ve created persistent Magick. A building block for future works. If you give the sigil a name and speak it everytime you draw it, it will charge even faster. Congratulations! You\’re a wizard, Harry!
