If you\’ve ever had a conversation with a magician, even just one conversation, you\’ve probably heard them talk about crystal quartz. It is the most white-bread, basic, and essential tool in most types of magician\’s tool belt. But why? What is it that makes this little, clear crystal so important? What does it do?
In Magick, or metaphysics as it has commonly been called for the last decade or so, everything in nature has it\’s own energy. It has a frequency that it vibrates on. Without getting too deep into string theory and taoism, the vibrational frequency that something is comprised of effects the way it interacts with energy around it. It\’s part of why different plant materials are used for different types of magic. It\’s why different types of metal are used for different rituals. It\’s also why quartz crystals are so important.
Crystal Quartz has a molecularly perfect structure. It is the ideal crystalline form. This stable, symmetric structure causes quartz to have a constant frequency, determined by thickness. While most materials, especially organic materials, have minor fluctuations in their frequency due to imperfections and molecular degrading, quartz is unchanging. This means that it can be used as a perfect channel for moving other energy. The perfect structure acts as a tunnel or even a vessel for frequencies other than that of the quartz.
So what? Why does that matter? I\’ve already shown you that you can pass energy through other materials too, right? You can just choose the right material for the spellwork you are doing and then you\’re good to go.
So, let\’s explore that. Let\’s say you\’ve learned how to use protection Magick. Okay, your method for that will require a white candle and some mandrake root. You\’ve also learned how to banish unwelcome spirits. For that you\’ll need some white sage and a brazier. You\’ve learned how to remove harmful energy from someone who is sick. You\’re method uses some Angelica, mint oil, and a blue strand of ribbon. Now pretend this list keeps going on for everything that you\’ve learned. After a while, your list of tools becomes massive. You will either need to carry around a truck full of supplies, or only use Magick at home.
Enter the Quartz Crystal. Small, lightweight, discreet, ready at a moment\’s notice, and prepared for anything. Almost everything that you use for almost every one of your spells can be switched out for a single Quartz Crystal. Most people know that quartz is used for protection. You can charge a Quartz to act as a negative energy vacuum. When you do so, it will attract and contain negative energy in the area. But did you know Quartz is equally capable of projecting energy? That\’s why it is commonly used as a top of a wand. It is adept at drawing in energy and at pushing out energy. Quartz can be used as a powerful tool for healing Magick. It is extremely powerful at exorcisms or banishing Magick. Quartz can be used to calm the area and the mind for meditation. It can be used to aid in divination Magick ( that\’s Magick used to seek information ). I don\’t think I have ever found a reason to use Magick that couldn\’t be achieved using Quartz Crystal.
It is not the only tool you will ever need. Again, remember that with enough practice and shadow work, you don\’t need any tools. Smoke and incense goes a long way. Candles are still extremely useful. Herbs are great for individual purposes. Oils allow anointing which couldn\’t be done with Quartz alone. But if you were to have just one tool, it should be the Quartz Crystal. It is by far the most versatile tool in your belt and will help in just about any situation.
