Holey Stones: A Gift from the Earth

Holey stone, Hag stone, Lode stone, Adder stone, Witch stone… They have been called so many names, but regardless of how you refer to it, the Holey stone is quite possibly the earliest, most primal tool for Magick

A Holey stone is any stone with an organically formed ( not intentionally made by man ) hole piercing cleanly through from one side to the other. According to legends, the stone will protect the user from all things harmful. Theoretically, this is because evil energy is too large to pass through the hole, meaning only good energy can cross. To be honest, this logic seems ridiculous if you give it even a moment\’s thought. Can\’t the evil just go around the stone? Why does it have to pass through? And for that matter, why is evil big and good small? Were early witches out here fat shaming?!

I personally think the theory behind why Holey Stones work is garbage. However, I can\’t deny that the usage at least seems to be accurate. Witches have been using these stones for millennia to protect against curses, dark spirits, and malevolent witches. Not just that, but other cultures and forms of mysticism independently discovered similar forms of protection. The native Americans have made dreamcatchers for centuries. These involve running webbing through the inside of a ring to catch or block out negative energy, allowing only good energy to pass through. It was common practice in much of Asia and the Middle East to crawl through holes in large stones to rid one\’s self of illness and negative energies. Scandinavia has seen a similar practice involving holes tunneled through the soil. In proto-paganism the circle is considered the most basic symbol for protection in general.

The Holey stone certainly fits in with the rest of those methods of protection. The Holey stone, however, is not a one-trick pony. It can be used for so many other things aside from just protection.

Tied to a bed post or hung on the wall above the headboard, a Holey stone can prevent negative dreams and energies while you sleep, similar to Dreamcatchers. It also promotes prophetic dreams when used in this way.

It can be worn as an amulet to repel malevolent energies.

It can be tied to your keys to help you never lose them.

When carried for long periods of time, a Holey stone can bring good luck and attract the attention of fae.

A Holey stone held to the ear can enhance or unlock clairaudience in a gifted individual.

Peering through the hole of a Holey stone can allow a witch to see into the spirit world. This also allows the witch to visually see magical auras and energies.

Holey stones are used as powerful anchors for water Magick and moon Magick, having a strong connection to the Wiccan Goddess.

While these stones are readily available online at very affordable prices, you can alternatively find your own in nature. They are most commonly found along shorelines where they have been carved out by the elements for years.
